Nigeria invests billions in education and research, but very little in commercialisation.
Researchers publish papers. Patents remain unlicensed. Laboratory discoveries never leave the university. Innovations with the potential to solve national and global problems fail to attract investment because they are considered too early, too technical or too risky.
Traditional venture capital typically invests after a product has been built. Banks require collateral. Government grants are often insufficient to bridge the gap between research and the marketplace.
This leaves one of the world’s most valuable assets, scientific knowledge, without the capital required to create economic value.
